Spring Time Savings The cold weather is going away and it’s time to think Spring. 1. Change your furnace filter. If you have central air you want to make sure it’s healthy air your breathing. Filters should be changed at least every other month to make sure they are working efficiently and not restricting air flow. 2. Clean up the yard If you are thinking about selling your house this year, this is a must do. A house with a clean yard is worth more than one that is messy. True story—I recently had my home appraised. My neighbor’s yard was very messy. We have put up a boundry line of trees to try to hide the mess. The appraiser told me that my house would be worth $10,000 more if my neighbor’s yard was cleaner. I wonder how much more her house would be worth with her yard clean. If your yard is very messy, you could face fines from the local Board of Health and/or insurance claims if someone were to get hurt on something in your yard. Now, most of us are not in that situation and may not be selling our homes either, but cleaning up still helps. Get rid of all that winter clutter. Rake your yard and pick up any trash. Clean out around vent outlets Clean out the shed– and discover that you already own 5 rakes. Give a fresh coat of paint to porches, sheds, Picnic table, etc. By keeping them painted, they will last longer and you won’t have to spend money replacing them. Talk a walk around your yard and make a list of whatever you see that needs attention. Then spend the spring taking care of that list. A little money spent now on paint will save you a bundle later. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. 4.Get Rid of the Clutter You would be very surprised to find out how much that clutter is costing you. First of all are your heating vents covered up by boxes and bags. You can’t heat your home efficiently if they are. Secondly, Your heating system has to heat all that stuff in your house as well as the air if it wants to maintain a certain temperature. So how much longer is your heater running just to heat all the clutter? Clutter costs you money! Here is a great site that has a wonderful program to help get your house clutter free and stay that way. The Flylady 5. Shut off the lights! It’s simple but we all forget it. When you leave a room shut off the light. Overtime this will save you a bundle on your electric bill. I was a big offender of this rule. I like to be able to see where I’m going, so I would turn on every light in the house. Then I tried to keep shutting the lights off when I didn’t need them. Wow, what a difference in my electric bill. I saved over $25 in one month. That’s $300.00 a year. That money now goes to help pay down the mortgage. 6. Water, Water Everywhere It is a necessity, but don’t waste it. Here are some tips: Wait until you have a full load for your washing machine. Don’t overload it but partial loads waste water. While your lathering up in the shower, turn the water flow down or off. When your ready to rinse turn it back up. Fill up your sink when washing the dishes then shut the water off until you are ready to rinse a bunch of dishes at once. Take care when washing your car or watering your garden. Don’t use too much water. Fix any leaky faucets and toilets that keep running. It doesn’t seem like a lot of water but believe me it adds up quickly. In one night my drippy faucet filled a large cooking pan. Imagin that every night, every day for a month. That’s a lot of water you are paying for. My daughter likes to play in the water in the sink. Rather than let the water run or fill the whole sink up, I just fill up a pan and let her play in that. It’s a lot less water for her to make a mess with too. 7. Examine your Bills Take a look at your monthly bills for utilities. Write down how much they were this month. Then try to save on each of them. Check them next month and see how much you saved. If you didn’t save any on say, your heating bill then reexamine what you are doing and try again. It took me about six months before I really had a good handle on the bills and had lowered them all. It takes time and effort but it’s well worth it. The extra money can be put on those credit card bills and mortgage. Yippie! Also look at bills for your cable and internet service provider. Do you really need all those channels? Dropping down to a lesser package can save you at least $12 a month. That’s $144.00 a year. —————————————————————————— Still More... 7 Easy ways to save Money with your Home |
|
Hello Friend, Wednesday,April 19 2006 If you’re like me, you want to find ways to keep more of your money in your pocket. However, it seems like all the books that are out there talk about great ways to save money but they take a lot of time and effort to do. Time is something I’m short on these days, how about you? So I figured out some easy things to do with your house, and in your life, that will save you a lot of money over the year. There is nothing to buy here just some honest information that I want to pass along to help others like me. Sign Up Here My Story Only a few years ago I was deep in debt. Bill collectors were calling, I was afraid to answer the phone. I dreaded going to the mailbox everyday, and sometimes I just wouldn’t go. I left bills unopened because I couldn’t face what was inside them. I knew I was in trouble but I just kept thinking that things would some how work themselves out. I struggled to pay the “important” bills on time, like the mortgage. Credit cards were maxed out and I lived with a constant knot in my stomach. After several years of living in fear and worry I finally realized that things would not work themselves out and that I had to take action. I started to look around and realized that my debt problem had affected all of my life. My house was a mess because I was so depressed over my finances, that I couldn’t take pride in how my house looked and I let it fall apart. My relationship with my husband was strained to say the least. Plus he always complained about how the house looked. I didn’t have the patience to take time to play with my new baby and I was just generally unhappy. I decided to take control. It seemed over whelming at first but little by little I achieved success. One of the first things I did was to stop living like I had plenty of money. I had debts to pay and that’s where the money had to go. I did tons of research and found lots of ways to save money right in my own home. I also found ways to save money in my car, grocery shopping and general shopping, plus lots of other places. I couldn’t believe how much money I was throwing away every month just living the way I thought everyone lived. Through my research, I have learned that not everyone was spending (wasting) the kind of money I was. I learned that most of the people that have money live very modestly and are conservative with their money and spend it wisely. Well, it took some time and some of the changes were difficult but what a difference it has made! I truly love life now. My relationship with my husband is so much more loving and strong. I have time to play with my baby and my house and car are nice and clean, something that I am now very proud of. I can answer the phone and go to the mailbox without fear and finally I can live again. Oh, I still have some debt to pay off but it’s manageable and gets paid on time, every time. We have been able to take some family vacations and that knot in my stomach is gone. I knew a lot of people that were in similar positions as I was and I wanted to help. So, I am here to help you now. I want you to feel the relief that I feel. I want you to experience the best in life rather than worrying about how to pay your bills.
